Edwin "Ed" Bender, age 102, of Mitchell, SD died Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at Firesteel Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Monday, August 11, 2014 at First Lutheran Church with burial at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM Sunday at Will Funeral Chapel with prayer service beginning at 5:00 PM.

Ed Bender, son of Philip and Christina (Bertsch) Bender, was born November 11, 1911 in rural Fulton, SD. He attended country school and graduated from Fulton High School in 1929. Ed then attended business school in Grand Island, NE and returned to the family farm.

Ed was united in marriage with Magdalene Tschirley on August 10, 1936 in Spencer, SD. The couple bought a farm north of Fulton, SD. They continued to farm until 1970 and lived on the farm until 1986 when they moved to Mitchell, SD. The couple wintered in Hawaii for several years. Ed and his wife moved into Country Side Living on November 4, 2008.

He enjoyed craft work, playing cards, tinkering and traveling extensively.

Ed was a member of First Lutheran Church since the late 1940s. He served on the Hanson County Soil Conservation District and was a former school board member.

Grateful for having shared his life are his two sons, Ron (Doris) Bender, Richfield, MN and Charles Bender, New Castle, UT; a daughter-in-law, Carol Bender, Fargo, ND; four grandchildren; six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Magdalene on March 1, 2009; an infant daughter, Kristal; a son,

Alan; six brothers and six sisters.
