The Tigers (1-0) jumped out to a 32-17 lead at halftime. DWU guard and Alexandria native Amanda Hart had 14 points in the first half, finishing with a team-high 20 points.

“We had some kids step up tonight,” DWU women’s basketball coach Jason Christensen said. “We know Amanda can shoot the ball and Kim (Johnson) can do what she does, but Erica Herrold and Kristin Sabers made some big shots early on for us. I think they are going to provide us with that depth we need throughout the year.”

Starting forward Kim Johnson was 7-of-11 from the field for 18 points and five rebounds. Freshman forward Herrold, a Parkston native, added 14 points, while junior forward Katie Johnson had eight points.

The Tigers shot 44.8 percent from the field and 68.8 percent from behind the line. DWU had 18 steals and 16 turnovers, while KWU had seven steals and turned the ball over 27 times.

“We shot the ball real well tonight,” Christensen said. “Anytime you shoot the ball well, you are going to have a good night. I think we still have to work on our defense. We got outrebounded by one so we have to do a better job at that, but overall it was a good night.”

KWU was led by the trio of Christian Cassity, Vanessa Kresin and Alecia Smith. Cassity and Kresin each scored 16 points, while Smith had 20 points.

DWU continues play at the Doane Classic at 11 a.m. today against Park University.
