The DWU women's softball team opened its fall schedule with a tripleheader Saturday against Mount Marty College by taking all three games over the Lancers.
Tigers' pitching stole the show as freshman Krista Huber and senior Jill Dickson each picked up a win in the first two games. Lorissa Loeppky and Katie Ettecht combined to shut down Mount Marty in the final game.
"Pitching looked really strong and we hit the ball well at times," DWU coach Ed Kieff said, adding the crowd was the largest he's ever seen at home.
Huber, a Mitchell native, made her debut in the opening game on a warm afternoon at Caldwell Park Sports Complex, striking out 15, allowing just two hits and picking up the complete game. Alex Davis and Bailey Gummer each went 2-for-4 and combined for three RBIs in the 7-1 win.
In the second game, Dickson struck out 11 Lancer batters, while allowing four hits in a 4-3 Tigers win. Tiffany Sharp was perfect, going 3-for-3.
The combined pitching of Loeppky and Uttecht and timely hitting late in the finale pushed DWU to a 7-2 victory and sweep over Mount Marty.
Limiting strikeouts is something Kieff has stressed to his team, and Saturday saw only 10 Tigers get punched out in 21 innings.
The Tigers have 24 players heading into the 2014 season and coach Ed Kieff has scheduled as many games as possible this fall as competition for positions will be tough.
"We will have a lot of competition heading into the season which will help going forward," Kieff said.
The Tigers travel to Dakota State University Saturday in Madison for another tripleheader starting at 3 p.m.
