DWU drops season opener to Wisconsin-Stout 35-20
MENOMONIE, Wis. -- The Dakota Wesleyan University football team’s streak of winning its season opener came to an end Saturday.
DWU jumped on the board first with a two-yard touchdown reception by Anthony Muilenburg from quarterback Jon Bane.
Muilenburg, a senior wide receiver from Sioux Falls added two more touchdowns including an 87-yard TD reception in the fourth quarter. The former All-American finished the game with 123 receiving yards on six catches and three touchdowns. All three of the Muilenburg’s touchdown receptions, were thrown by DWU senior quarterback Jon Bane. The Temple, Texas native went 19-39 for 243 yards.
Running back Francois Barnaud was also able to go over the century mark for the Tigers on the ground, finishing the day with 161 yards on 23 carries.
After the opening touchdown by DWU, Wisconsin-Stout scored 20 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a commanding 20-6 lead at the half.
The Blue Devils struck again early in the third quarter on a 63-yard touchdown pass from Hank Kujak to Trevor Morning. Kujak would go on to throw for 262 yards and three touchdowns, while Morning hauled in six passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns.
Wisconsin-Stout had 480 yards of total offense, while DWU finished with 456.
Wesleyan linebackers Brady Bonte and Jeff Maassen led the Tiger defense. Bonte had 14 tackles and Maassen added 13.
DWU will hit the road again next week as it opens conference play against Briar Cliff University 1 p.m. Saturday at the DakotaDome in Vermillion.
