DWU Blue & White Days schedule announced

Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell will welcome and celebrate alumni and friends during its 99th Blue & White Days.

Blue & White Day is set for Saturday, Oct. 6, with the traditional parade and football game, but homecoming weekend actually runs from Thursday through Sunday with events that range from free music to sporting events to reunions.

DWU's homecoming weekend kicks off Thursday with the annual Opperman Lecture, "Trust the Process," which will be given by 1980 DWU alumnus the Rev. Alan Nagel, of Edmond, Okla. The Opperman Lecture is at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 4, in the Sherman Center and is free and open to the public.

Thursday evening, friends and supporters of the university will be honored during the Legacy Banquet. Receiving distinguished alumni awards this year are Alan ('80) and Debra ('78) (Bartelt) Nagel for the College of Arts and Humanities; Cody ('00) and Jennifer ('01) (Wahle) Hoefert for the Donna Starr Christen College of Healthcare, Fitness and Sciences; and Ardith Miller ('50) for the College of Leadership and Public Service.

The pep rally and burning of the "W" will be at 9 p.m., Friday in front of the Christen Family Recreation/Wellness Center on campus.

Saturday morning's parade begins at 10:30 a.m. on Main Street with this year's theme "Apocalypse 2012." Tailgating will begin at Joe Quintal Field at 11:30 a.m. followed by the football game at 1 p.m. There are also volleyball and soccer games Friday and Saturday, along with an alumni baseball game; see the schedule of events at dwu.edu/alumni/homecoming/.

Also during the weekend, the DWU and Mitchell Area Community Theatre collaboration of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Pepsi-Cola Theatre for Performing Arts. Tickets are available at the box office and performances continue the following weekend.

The festivities wrap up Sunday with a Homecoming Hymn Festival at 5 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 7, at the First United Methodist Church with all the DWU and DWU/community choral ensembles, Wesleyan Bells and a special brass ensemble. This concert is free and open to the public.
