Duane O. Kistler

Duane Kistler, Sioux Falls, SD, died May 3, 2014, at Dougherty Hospice. He was 78.

Duane Orville Kistler was born July 21, 1935, in Mitchell, SD, to Orville and Agnes (Kessler) Kistler. He graduated from Note Dame High School, Mitchell, SD, in 1953. He joined the US Army in 1954, and served to 1956.

Duane was united in marriage to Donna Jean Kiepke on August 31, 1956, in Mitchell, SD. He then joined the US Air Force, serving from 1956 to 1982. He retired as E9 CMSgt. Duane received a Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, two Joint Service Commendation Medals, and four USAF Commendation Medals as well as various other decorations. Following his retirement from active military service, Duane and Donna moved to Sioux Falls where he attended National College. He then worked at the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls for 13 years, retiring in 1997. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, DAV, and the VFW.

He is survived by his wife, Donna; and children, Steven Kistler (Sheila) of Cheyenne, WY, Ted Kistler (Deb), Sioux Falls, Lori Kocevar (Chris), Sioux Falls; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and his sister, Donna McEwen of Sioux Falls. Duane was preceded in death by sons, Timothy and Michael.

Mass of Resurrection will be 10:30 am Wednesday at Christ the King Catholic Church in Sioux Falls. Visitation will begin at noon, Wednesday, with the family present to greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 Tuesday evening at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Avenue, Sioux Falls. Rite of Interment with Air Force Military Honors will be held at 2:30 pm at Calvary Cemetery, Mitchell, SD.
