Driver injured in accident near Freeman
Mitchell South Dakota 120 South Lawler 57301

FREEMAN — A Bridgewater man was injured in a one-vehicle accident near Freeman Thursday. Trooper Casey Bassett with the South Dakota Highway Patrol said Daniel John Leitheiser, 63, was driving a Ford F250 pickup and pulling an in-bed ball hitch trailer. Leitheiser was northbound on U.S. Highway 81 near the 274th Street intersection.

Bassett said a medical condition caused Leitheiser to enter the east ditch south of the intersection. The vehicle hit a mailbox, went through two fences and entered a pasture area.

It traveled another quarter-mile and went into a shelterbelt, where it took out some trees.

Bassett would not disclose Leitheiser’s medical condition, but he said Leitheiser did appear to be wearing his seat belt.

Leitheiser was taken to Freeman Regional Health Services.

No citations were issued, but the accident is still under investigation, Bassett said.
