Kayla Charging Hawk, 29, allegedly told police she left her 2-year-old and 5-year-old children with her 13-year-old child Saturday, Sept. 7, so she could attend a poker run. Charging Hawk allegedly left her home on Havens Avenue around noon that day and did not return until 7 p.m.

According to court documents, as she drove home from the poker run, she saw the two younger children walking around Mitchell.

“She did not stop to check on them,” court documents say. “She said she was intoxicated at the time.”

Charging Hawk allegedly told police she went home, cleaned up and went to her mother’s home to continue drinking.

Around 9:30 p.m., law enforcement began getting calls about Charging Hawk’s children walking around the city alone. Shortly after, dispatch received a call that a woman took the kids to Village Bowl, where law enforcement found them outside the building.

Court documents say the children had nothing to eat all day except crackers, and they didn’t know where Charging Hawk was and that she’d locked them out of an apartment.

The children were taken to the Davison County Sheriff’s Department where law enforcement contacted the Department of Social Services and a judge. The two young children were released to their father, who had been on his way home from his job in Presho. The 13-year-old was released to Social Services.

Before being arrested Sept. 12, Charging Hawk allegedly told police she did not use good judgment when she left her children alone and that she neglected her children. She said she wouldn’t do it again and denied the children only had crackers to eat.

Charging Hawk is charged with a misdemeanor, which carries a maximum sentence of one year in jail,

a $2,000 fine or both.
