Dorothy Schoenfelder, age 84, of Iroquois, SD passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at her home in Iroquois. Her Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 31, 2014 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Iroquois, SD, with burial in the church cemetery. A rosary service will begin at 4:30 p.m., on Sunday with a scripture service at 5:00 p.m., followed by visitation with family present until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday March 30, at St Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Iroquois, SD; or visitation Monday morning one hour prior to the service at the church.
Dorothy McTighe, the daughter of Cumian and Julia (Swafford) McTighe, was born on January 15, 1930, in Maurine, SD. She attended school and graduated from St. Martin Academy in Sturgis, SD. Dorothy also received a degree in nursing, and worked for Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Hot Springs, SD and at St. Johns Hospital in Huron, SD. Dorothy worked for the InterLakes Community Action Homemaker program and Heartland Home Care Services.
Dorothy married Lester F. Schoenfelder on February 23, 1954 at the St. Martin Catholic Church in Huron, SD. The couple made their home on the family farm near Iroquois until 1976 when they moved into the town of Iroquois.
Dorothy was an active member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Iroquois for many years. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, gardening, canning, baking, and doing crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. Dorothy was happiest at home taking care of her family.
Grateful for having shared in Dorothys life are her nine children: Mary (Charles) Unterbrunner, of Artesian, SD, Janeen (Wade) Kouf of Huron, SD, Don (Jeannine) Schoenfelder of Huron, SD, Jim (Brenda) Schoenfelder of Iroquois, SD, Peggy (Paul) Jungers of Watertown, SD, Cecile (Jeff) Zwanziger of Huron, SD, Tom (Amy) Schoenfelder of Cavour, SD, John (Michelle) Schoenfelder of Iroquois, SD, and Julie (Jason Golder) Schoenfelder of Bridgewater, SD; 42 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; brother, Joe (JoAnne) McTighe of Maurine, SD; three sisters: Helen Nuzum of Longview, WA, Amy (John) Gruntmeir of De Smet, SD, and Elizabeth (Juno) Sundstrom of Deadwood, SD; sister-in-law, Joyce Schoenfelder of De Smet, SD; and many nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lester in 1980; granddaughter, Rebecca Schoenfelder; brother, James McTighe; seven sisters: Martha McQuirk, Geraldine Salem, Rita McTighe, Gertrude Timmons, Jeanne Estergard, Sister Marie McTighe and Martina Krentz.
