Donald Julius Geidel

Donald Julius Geidel passed away September 25, 2013 as a result of a car accident. Funeral services will be Monday, September 30, 2013 at 10:30 am at Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Dimock. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 pm Sunday, September 29, 2013 at the church with a prayer service at 7:00 pm with Pastor David Otten officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.

Donald was born to Alvin H. and Alma Geidel on January 12, 1931 in rural Douglas County. He was baptized by Rev. Hempel on February 8, 1931. He was confirmed on June 24, 1945 by Pastor John Dewald. He was a life-time member at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Dimock, SD.

He attended rural grade school in Douglas County. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1952 and attended basic training at Camp Pendleton, CA. He was then sent to Germany until 1954.

After returning from Germany, he worked on the family farm. He was united in marriage to Gladys Scheetz on October 24, 1956 at Immanuel Lutheran Church by Rev. Lenord Eberhand. They farmed near Delmont until 1960. They then moved and farmed near Mount Vernon. In 1966, they purchased and began a dairy farm near Dimock.

He served on various offices at Immanuel Lutheran Church and on the Washington township board. In his retirement years he enjoyed playing cards, pool, board games, fishing and being on the church dartball team.

Grateful for sharing his life are his wife, Gladys, and four children: DelRay, Dimock, Gail (David) Sweet, Greeley, CO, Steven (Tang), Ethan and Robin (Gary) Kruse, Hutchinson, MN; nine grandchildren: Tyrel (Erin) Geidel, Tiffany Geidel, Tara (Duston) Seitz, Billi Jo Sweet, Ed Geidel, Cassie (Patrick) Meier, Bo Geidel and Travis and Hannah Kruse; four great grandchildren: Olivia and Owen Meier, Ellie Sweet and Gabriel Geidel; brothers, Alvin, Mitchell and Harvey, Parkston; sisters: Nelda Neugebauer, Mitchell, Irma Geidel, Loveland, CO and Margaret Scheetz, Mitchell; in-laws: Marvin Hoffman, Loveland, CO, Dorothea Geidel, Mitchell, Elvina Scheetz, Mitchell, David and Beverly Scheetz, Parkston, Lois and Lambert Bialas, Dimock, Dwain and Kathy Scheetz, Mt. Vernon, Gary Scheetz, Parkston, Marilyn Castillo, Parkston and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law, Edward and Erna Scheetz; brothers, Gilbert and Gerhard; sisters: Adelia Matzner, Leona Rogers, Evelyn Hoffman, Lydia Geidel and Adeline Geidel; brothers-in-law: Ervin Matzner, Merle Rogers, Raymond Neugebauer, Howard Geidel, Marvin Scheetz, Harlan Scheetz and Katherine Heidinger.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Main Street Living or the Lutheran Heritage Foundation.
