Doane takes two from Wesleyan
The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team dropped two games to Doane College in a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.
DWU (16-18, 2-6 GPAC) has lost 10 of its last 11 games and struggled to get its offense going against Doane (32-7, 10-0 GPAC), which has not lost a conference game this season.
In the first game, DWU put together eight hits, but failed to score in a 5-0 loss. Michael Johnson was 2-for-2 with a walk. DWU starting pitcher Chris Housley went 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing three runs, two earned on six hits and striking out one.
Doane starter Elliot Engle pitched six innings, allowing eight hits with four strikeouts.
DWU took a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning of the second game on an RBI single by Cole Wenande, but Doane tied the game in the second and took the lead with two runs in the eighth for a 3-1 win.
Wes Snyder started on the mound for DWU in the second game, going seven innings, allowing one run and striking out three. Wenande finished with two of the three DWU hits, while Jared Neilan added the other. DWU committed six errors in the game two loss and nine total in the doubleheader.
DWU plays a doubleheader against Hastings College at 1 p.m. today at Cadwell Park in Mitchell. The games against Hastings were moved from Sunday due to inclement weather.
