DeVries' single lifts Mount Vernon over Dimock/Emery
PARKSTON -- Sean DeVries had a single to right field in the top of the ninth inning to score Brian Vermeulen, lifting Mount Vernon over Dimock /Emery 7-6 Thursday in a District 5B amateur game.
The hit came off Dimock /Emery pitcher Phil Johnson, who took the loss. Mount Vernon's Cody London pitched all nine inning and struck out nine to pick up the win.
At the plate for Mount Vernon, Vermeulen had a two-run double and a single, Cameron Deinert and Deric Denning each had two singles.
Josh Engquist started for Dimock /Emery and pitched seven innings and struck out eight.
Dimock/Emery's Jason Schmidt was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer in the first inning. He also had a double and a single.
Mount Vernon advances to play the winner of a game between the Parkston Mudcats and Corsica/Stickney at 7 p.m. Sunday, while Dimock /Emery plays at 8 p.m. Wednesday in an elimination game.
