Despite rough economy, SD exports strong in 2012
VERMILLION (AP) -- Despite a sluggish national economy, manufacturing exports out of South Dakota have been solid in 2012.
Rock Nelson, director of the state's International Trade Center, told South Dakota Public Radio the state exported nearly $1.5 billion of manufactured products in 2011. That doesn't include grains and livestock. He expects 2012 exports to exceed that figure.
Nelson says the future is bright for exporting. South Dakota-based companies are seeing increased foreign business with the potential for a domestic rebound next year.
Nelson's organization began in 2011 with a boost from the governor's office of economic development and the business community. It offers free advice and support for businesses contemplating exporting overseas.
