Defense helps SC/W beat Hanson girls
ALEXANDRIA -- Myah Selland scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds as the Sanborn Central/Woonsocket girls' basketball team defeated Hanson 59-46 Monday.
Selland's numbers are not out of the ordinary, but she is.
The 6-foot-1 guard is in the eighth grade and playing major minutes for SC/W (10-1).
Selland, who also plays on the JV team, was the only eighth-grader on the court but her performance out shadowed her youth.
"It's tough but my teammates help, and they make it a lot easier for me," Selland said.
After dropping its first game of the season to Warner Saturday, SC/W knew what it had to do to bounce back.
SC/W forced 30 turnovers and shot 20-of-48 from the field.
"We felt we could play better than we did against Warner," SC/W co-head coach Rob Baruth said. "The defense is improving every night. The girls are doing a good job, and it is something we talked about a lot coming into this game."
Both teams' offenses struggled to find their rhythms in the first quarter of the game, but SC/W's offense got on track in the second quarter with major help from Marissa Weber.
The junior forward scored eight of the Blackhawks' first 10 points in the quarter, highlighted by a sideline 3-pointer to give SC/W an 18-10 lead.
"We had a lot more intensity, and we went to the hoop hard and didn't get in foul trouble," said Weber, who finished with 14 points.
Along with Weber, Shelby Selland and Rachel Selland controlled the paint and only allowed Hanson to make 15 shots from the field.
Shelby Selland led the Blackhawks in scoring and rebounds with 20 and eight, while Rachel Selland grabbed five.
The Beavers, who were down by as many as 19 points at one point in the game, battled back and cut the deficit to 10 but came no closer because of missed free throws.
Hanson shot 52 percent from the line.
Hailey Doyle, Kynedi Cheeseman and Kendra Cheesman each had seven points for Hanson.
"We missed too many free throws," Hanson coach Jim Bridge said. "We missed some opportunities and got away with our game plan."
Hanson (8-2) and plays Kimball/ White Lake Thursday in White Lake. SC/W plays at Wessington Springs Thursday.
