De Smet plans $5M events center project
DE SMET (AP) — Nearly 1,000 people and businesses are chipping in to help pay for an events center, new sports facilities and a community theater in the eastern South Dakota city of De Smet.
The Huron Plainsman reports that 878 donors are paying $3.4 million of the $5 million project. The city, school district and state are paying the rest. There will be no tax increases for the 1,100 residents of the community.
The project includes an events center with a large exhibit hall, a wellness center, community theater and meeting rooms. Adjacent to the center will be a new football field and track, with locker rooms, restrooms, a kitchen and a concessions area.
Construction is to begin in a few weeks, with completion in about 10 months.
