Davison County's District 3 commissioner, Gerald Weiss, died Saturday evening in Sioux Falls, District 2 Commissioner Randy Reider told The Daily Republic on Sunday.
Weiss was battling liver cancer, Reider said, and some of that had spread into his lungs. He died at about 5:30 p.m. at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, Reider said.
Weiss missed Tuesday's county commission meeting because of health concerns. He was earlier transported to the hosptial in Mitchell by ambulance, eventually was moved to Sioux Falls and died there.
"What a nice man," Reider said. "He really cared."
Here is part of Weiss' biography listed on the Davison County website:
Gerald was elected to the Commission in 2007 and took office in 2008 and was re-elected in 2012 and 2014.
He currently works in the TLE department in Walmart and a lot of you may know Gerald from his previous position at Walmart as a door greater for 12 years.
Gerald’s previous employment includes farming, law enforcement, truck driver, and a crew foreman at UBC Lumber Company. Gerald has also been a volunteer fireman for the city of Ethan and the fire chief for two years.
Gerald is privileged, honored and his goal has been to work for the citizens of Davison County.
