Crofton tops Lake Norden 8-2
A three-run seventh inning carried the Crofton (Neb.) Bluejays over the Lake Norden Lakers 8-2 in a second-round game at the South Dakota Class B state amateur baseball tournament Tuesday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.
Crofton's Kyle Mueller hit a two-run double to right field that scored Scott Donner and Aaron Losing. Joe Wiebelhaus added a sacrifice fly that scored Alex Mueller for the final run of the seventh inning, putting the Bluejays up 6-2.
Seth Erdmann earned the win on the mound for the Bluejays, pitching six innings, allowing two runs off five hits and striking out five.
Crofton (22-4) advances to take on the Parkston Mudcats at 6 p.m. Friday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell. Lake Norden finishes its season at 13-13 and is eliminated.
The Bluejays jumped out to an early lead in the third inning after Tyler Zimmerman hit a leadoff single and scored on a sacrifice fly. Rand Thygeson hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning, making Crofton's lead 2-0. In the sixth, pick-up player Macon Oplinger drew a leadoff walk and scored on a Zimmerman single, putting the Bluejays up 3-0.
Lake Norden responded in the bottom of the sixth as Jordan Johnson hit a two-run single, scoring Tony Campbell and Tim Kuphal. The Lakers trailed 3-2 going into the seventh inning.
In the top of the ninth, Crofton added two runs to put the game out of reach for Lake Norden.
Zimmerman finished batting 4-for-6 and Thygeson went 3-for-6 to lead the Bluejays.
Kuphal took the loss for the Lakers, giving up six runs off nine hits in seven innings. He had seven strikeouts.
Jessie Van Overbeke went 2-for-4 to lead the Lakers.
