Comedian Louie Anderson will perform a show at the Corn Palace on April 23. Anderson, who turns 60 on March 24, is a veteran comic, having performed on TV, including "The Tonight Show" and a turn as host of the game show "Family Feud;" in movies, including "Coming to America"; and at casinos and concert stages. He also created a two-time Emmy-winning cartoon series, "Life with Louie," and has written three books.

The show is a benefit for the Dakota Wesleyan University basketball team. Coach Jason Christensen said Anderson's great-aunt, Shirley Pierson, is a Mitchell resident with ties to Mount Vernon, and helped arrange the booking.

Christensen said he believes that those family ties helped reduce Anderson's fee, to assist the team in raising money.

"I think we did OK, yeah," he said. "This is a first-time thing for me."

Corn Palace Director Mark Schilling, who said the "South Dakota connection" helped land the show, said ticket prices will be released in about two weeks.

Christensen said he's unsure how much to anticipate being raised, but Anderson, a Minnesota native, sold out a Sioux Falls show a few years ago.

The Mitchell City Council will consider an application from Dan's Pro Shop of Mitchell, owned by Dan and Jackie Sabers, for a special event alcohol license at the Corn Palace and City Hall for the show.

Jackie Sabers said they are backers of the DWU team, and their daughter Kristin plans to play for the Tigers next season.

There are four applications for alcoholic beverage licenses for shows that the council will review tonight. All the shows will be at the Corn Palace, although the licenses are for both the Palace and the adjacent City Hall. Rooms in City Hall are often used in conjunction with entertainment events.

The other three are all from the Palace City Lions Club for special event malt beverage and wine licenses on April 13 for Hairball, April 14 for Clint Black and May 16 for Willie Nelson.
