Class A state girls' basketball tournament results
St. Thomas More 61, Garretson 16 SPEARFISH (AP) — Alexys Swedlund scored 20 points as St. Thomas More rolled to a 61-16 win over Garretson Thursday in the first round of the South Dakota Class A basketball tournament.
Swedlund made eight of 14 shots from the field for the top-seeded Cavaliers (21-1), who are was the 2012 state champions. St. Thomas More raced out to a 26-4 lead after one quarter.
The Cavalier shot 44 percent from the field and dominated in bench scoring (14-4), Points in the paint (14-2) and points off turnovers (29-7).
Cavaliers’ Moira Duffy added 14 points.
Brianna Mudder and Haley Edmundson led Garretson (11-12) with four points each. The Blue Dragon had lost 11 of 12 games to end the regular season, but earned its second state tournament berth, and first in Class A.
Sioux Valley 60, Pine Ridge 49 SPEARFISH (AP) — Carley Peterson had 11 points and 12 rebounds to lead Sioux Valley over Pine Ridge 60-49 Thursday at the South Dakota Class A girls basketball tournament.
Peterson had three of the Cossacks’ 10 three-pointers. As a team, Sioux Valley (20-3) shot better from long range (42 percent) than it did overall (38 percent). It also went 20-for-25 from the line.
Elk Point-Jefferson 77, Webster Area 30
SPEARFISH (AP) — McKenzie Mennenga’s 23 points helped Elk Point-Jefferson beat Webster Area 77-30 in the first round of the South Dakota Class A girls basketball tournament on Thursday.
Mennenga was 9 of 17 from the field and made 5 of 9 3-pointers for the Huskies (20-2), who are in the state tournament for the first time since 1999.
Keely Bertram added 17 points and eight rebounds and the Huskies shot 53 percent from the field. They scored 33 points off 24 Webster Area turnovers.
Lindsey Vogl had 11 points for the Bearcats (14-8), who shot 31 percent. Webster is in a state tournament for the first time in 33 years.
Kaylee Granum had 17 points and Anna Keefe added 14 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Pine Ridge got a team-high 16 points from Santana White Dress.
The Lady Thorpes (20-3), who were runners-up at last year's state tourney, shot 33 percent from the field.
