Class A amateur roundup: Vermillion books spot in Class A title game
The Vermillion Red Sox earned a spot in Sunday's Class A state amateur baseball tournament title game with a 3-1 victory Friday over the Sioux Falls Brewers at Cadwell Park Sports Complex in Mitchell.
Vermillion's Kendall Hazel earned the win, giving up one earned run on six hits, striking out six and walking three in nine innings. Bryce Ahrendt suffered the loss, giving up three earned runs on 10 hits while striking out five in seven innings.
Robin Chute led the Red Sox offensively, going 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a double. A.J. Staiert went 2-for-4 and Blake Meechum went 2-for-3 in the win.
For Sioux Falls, Dan Morrison went 2-for-4.
Renner 12, Yankton 2
A six-run fifth inning propelled the Renner Monarchs over the Yankton Tappers 12-2 in eight innings Friday at the South Dakota Class A state amateur baseball tournament at Drake Field in Mitchell.
Matt Wilber pitched a complete game for the Monarchs, giving up two runs off six hits, while striking out three.
Juan Thomas had a home run and three RBIs and Michael Clapp went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIS to lead Renner offensively.
Yankton's Trey Krier suffered the loss on the mound, giving up six runs off six hits and striking out three. Jason Miller went 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.
Renner advances to play Castlewood at 11 a.m. today at Cadwell Park in Mitchell. Yankton is eliminated.
Castlewood Ravens 3, Sioux Falls Squirrels 2
The Castlewood Ravens defeated the Sioux Falls Squirrels 3-2 in an elimination game at the South Dakota Class A state amateur baseball tournament Friday at Drake Field in Mitchell.
Mitch Trego earned the win for Castlewood, giving up two runs off six hits and striking out five in 7 1/3 innings. Eric Danforth threw in relief to finish the game for the Ravens.
Danforth went 1-for-3 with an RBI and run scored to lead Castlewood.
Seth Peterson took the loss for Sioux Falls, pitching eight innings and giving up three runs off seven hits while striking out seven.
Lucas Wilber went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Squirrels.
Castlewood advances to play Renner at 11 a.m. today at Cadwell Park in Mitchell. Sioux Falls Squirrels are eliminated.
