Census: Lyman, Douglas counties lead region for growth

Census: Lyman, Douglas counties lead region for growth

Most counties in the Daily Republic's readership region grew from 2012 to 2013, but three grew faster than the rest, according to U.S. Census data released Thursday.

Lyman County, on the west side of the Missouri River, grew 2.4 percent to 3,892 residents. Across the river to the east, Brule County grew 1.3 percent to 5,366 to rank as the region's third-fastest growing county.

Douglas County ranked No. 2, up 1.6 percent to 3,023 residents.

Six counties lost population, though no losses exceeded 1 percent.

• Aurora County -- Population 2,720, down 1 percent

• Hutchinson County -- Population 7,145, down 0.8 percent

• Jones County -- Population 1,001, down 0.5 percent

• Gregory County -- Population 4,242, down 0.4 percent

• Sanborn County -- Population 2,324, down 0.2 percent

• Bon Homme County -- Population 7,046, down 0.1 percent

Davison County ranks as South Dakota's 10th most populous, with 19,823 people. The county continued a pattern of steady but slow growth, going up 0.2 percent.

Here's a look at other counties in the Mitchell region that grew between 2012 and 2013:

• Jerauld County: Population 2,066, up 1.1 percent

• McCook County -- Population 5,654, up 0.9 percent

• Miner County -- Population 2,333, up 0.7 percent

• Charles Mix County -- Population 9,241, up 0.3 percent

• Tripp County -- Population 5,498, up 0.3 percent

• Hanson County -- Population 3,405, up 0.2 percent

• Buffalo County -- Population 2,024, up 0.2 percent.
