Catching up: Stickney's Assmus takes fourth in first meet for SDSU

Stickney native and South Dakota State junior Shelby Assmus placed fourth out of 26 participants in the women's weight throw at the Mankato Preseason Open in Mankato, Minn., Saturday with a throw of 16.45 meters. In addition, Assmus placed fifth in the women's shot put with a throw of 12.62 meters.

This was SDSU's first meet of the track and field season.

- In the first meet of the indoor season for Augustana, freshman Jason Greenway, a Mitchell graduate, took second place in the 60-meter dash finals with a time of 6.97 seconds.

Greenway ran against brothers Justin and Cory in the preliminaries of the event. Justin, also a freshman for Augustana, finished 16th with a time of 7.23 seconds. Cory, a senior for South Dakota State, finished 19th at 7.34 seconds.

- Jayd Docken, a Winner graduate and sophomore wrestler at Augustana, won the 197-pound title at the MSU Moorhead Dragon Open last week with two major decisions and a pin, earning Principal Financial Athlete of the Week.

Docken, who received a bye in the first round, defeated a North Dakota State wrestler by a major decision of 14-1 in the second round and pinned a Southwest Minnesota State wrestler in 53 seconds to make it into the title match. In the championship, Docken won by a major decision of 16-3.

This was the first title of the season for Docken, who is now 6-2 overall. The Vikings continue their season Jan. 5 in a dual at Concordia-Moorhead.

- Former Parkston basketball standout David Maxwell is averaging 7.5 points and 4.7 rebounds per game seven games into his senior season with the University of Sioux Falls.

Maxwell, who has been a regular in the starting lineup for the Cougars, is leading the team in minutes at nearly 30 per game.

- Caitlin Way, a Mitchell High School graduate, took first place in the women's weight throw in Oklahoma State University's first meet of the indoor season at the Kansas State All Comers meet Saturday in Manhattan, Kan.

Way won the event with a throw of 17.30m, 0.52m away from her personal best of 17.82m.
