Mitchell High School graduate Austin Loes had a big weekend for the Helena Bighorns of the American West Hockey League, scoring one goal and adding four assists in two wins for the Bighorns.
Loes has two goals and five assists through five games this season. Helena (5-0) returns to the ice Friday when it hosts the Glacier Nationals.
Gau back on the mound for Augustana baseball
Former Hanson standout Tyson Gau made his season debut on the mound for the Augustana College baseball team Feb. 1 against No. 13 Southern Arkansas in Magnolia, Ark.
The senior took the 2-1 loss but pitched five solid innings, giving up four hits to the Muleriders and adding five strikeouts. Augustana (1-3) travels to St. Charles, Mo., Saturday to face Lindenwood University.
SDSU wrestler Kocer improves to 23-10
The South Dakota State University wrestling team went 1-1 Sunday in San Luis Obispo, Calif., beating Cal Poly 31-10 before falling to Stanford 20-14.
Wagner native Alex Kocer, a redshirt freshman for the Jacks, won by decision in both of his matches, defeating Cal Poly’s Kyle Chene and Stanford’s Donovan Halphin in the 149-pound weight class.
Kocer is 23-10 overall for SDSU (3-6, 2-1 WWC) heading into a dual with Northern Illinois Friday at Frost Arena in Brookings.
Friesen having success for Dakota State
Sara Friesen, a Dakota State University junior, placed 21st in the women’s 200-meter dash with a time of 30.55 seconds at the Dakota Realty Alumni Track and Field Meet, hosted by the University of South Dakota at the DakotaDome Saturday.
Friesen, a graduate of Freeman High School, also competed in the women’s 60-meter dash where she placed 22nd, clocking in at 8.77 seconds.
DSU competes again Saturday in Sioux Center, Iowa, at the Dordt Invitational.
Klyaic, Miles placing
Black Hills State University sophomore runners Abbi Klyaic and Sierra Miles competed in the Birds and Bees Invitational over the weekend in Gilette, Wyo.
Klyaic, a former Canistota Hawk, finished sixth overall in the women’s 200-meter dash at the meet, finishing in 27.81 seconds.
Miles, a Montrose native, finished ninth in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 11:36.38. Black Hills State stays at home in Spearfish this weekend to compete in the Rock and Jock Open Saturday.
Wyoming’s Havlik wins most recent dual
Brent Havlik, a redshirt freshman on the Wyoming wrestling team, won by major decision in his matchup at 174-pounds with Northern Colorado’s Josh Van Tine Friday in a dominating 41-6 victory for the Cowboys in Laramie, Wyo.
Havlik, a Mitchell native, is 16-9 on the year and returns to the mat Feb. 15 in Wyoming’s dual with Utah Valley in Laramie.
