Catching up: Kokesh claims title at Las Vegas meet
Wagner native and University of Nebraska 174-pound wrestler Robert Kokesh won his weight class at the Cliff Keen Invitational Saturday in Las Vegas.
Kokesh won a 17-5 major decision over the fourth-seeded Mathew Miller, of Navy, before winning by injury default in the championship match. Kokesh, a sophomore for the Huskers, was the No. 1 seed at the tournament. He was one of two Nebraska wrestlers to claim a title in Las Vegas.
Kokesh and the Huskers return to action this weekend for a pair of matches. They face Arizona State at 7 p.m. Saturday, before hosting Wisconsin at 2 p.m. Sunday.
- Trina Young, a Mitchell native and sophomore at South Dakota State University, took third place in the 200-yard butterfly at the Freeman Invitational Saturday in Minneapolis.
Another Mitchell native from the SDSU women's swimming team, Andee Budahl, swam a season-best 1:56.31 and placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle.
Budahl also won the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:43.11.
On the men's side, Mitchell native Shea Patrick won the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:07.55, a season-best mark. He also swam a season-best in the 100-yard breaststroke with a mark of 59.11.
The Jackrabbits' swimming team is back in action when it goes to Omaha, Neb., on Saturday.
- April Winne, a Scotland High School graduate, is averaging 5.9 points and 1.9 rebounds per game for Mount Marty College's women's basketball team, which is 5-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
Winne has started seven games and is averaging 26.1 minutes per game. She scored a season-best 10 points in a 70-58 victory over Doane Saturday in a Great Plains Athletic Conference game in Yankton.
