Catching up: Knight takes third at Sioux City Relays

University of Sioux Falls standout and former Mitchell Kernel Kendra Knight took third in the 400-meter dash at the 50th Annual Sioux City Relays over the weekend in Sioux City, Iowa.

Knight finished in 57.82 seconds, while fellow senior and Cougar teammate Brigitte Gross, a Hanson graduate, finished second in the pole vault with a mark of 3.96 meters.

Three other area female competitors placed during the Sioux City Relays.

Dakota State University junior Sara Friesen, a Freeman native, finished 34th overall in the women’s 100-meter dash. In the triple jump, White Lake native Ali Haines finished 16th overall for the University of South Dakota with a leap of 9.76 meters. Northern State University junior Mariah Nelson had a season-best throw of 40 feet, 10.5 inches in the shot put, good enough for sixth place. The Mitchell Christian graduate also finished eighth in the discus throw and 12th in the hammer throw.

On the men’s side, Dordt College’s Christian Van Dyke finished in the top 50 in two events in a field comprised of several Division I and Division II runners. Van Dyke, a Mitchell native, finished 49th in the men’s 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 3.14 seconds and 30th in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:14.86.

Moore starting in 11 of first 20 games for NSU

Mitchell graduate Courtney Moore, a true freshman for the Northern State softball team, went 1-for-2 in a loss to NSIC-foe Wayne State in Wayne, Neb.

Moore has started 11 of 20 games for Northern (9-23, 2-14 NSIC), which hosts Bemidji State in a doubleheader Friday in Aberdeen and Minnesota State, Crookston on Saturday.

Edler batting .265 on the season

Tyler Edler, a senior for the Mount Marty baseball team, went 2-for-4 and had one run in the Lancers’ Great Plains Athletic Conference loss to Hastings College Saturday in Yankton. The Menno High School graduate is batting .265 on the year.

Mount Marty (16-17, 1-9 GPAC) hosts Northwestern in GPAC action starting at 1 p.m. today in Yankton.
