Catching up with former area athletes: Gau helps Vikings to NSIC title
Tyson Gau played his part in helping the Augustana College baseball team to its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championship over the weekend.
Gau, an Alexandria native, got the start on the mound during the Vikings' second game of the tournament, which was a 7-5 win over St. Cloud State University Thursday at Karras Park in Sioux Falls.
The right-hander threw 6 2/3 innings, giving up four earned runs on eight hits. He had four strikeouts and walked one in the outing.
The Vikings (40-14) earned a sixth seed in the NCAA Central Region Tournament and play No. 1 seed Arkansas Tech University (42-10) in the program's second NCAA Baseball Tournament appearance in school history. The game is at 7 p.m. Thursday in Russellville, Ark.
Patrick helping Wolverines
University of Michigan first basebman Kendall Patrick helped the Wolverines beat Big Ten opponent Northwestern 2-1 in a three-game series May 2-4.
Patrick, a Mitchell native, went 3-for-8 during the series for Michigan. In the second game, he went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored in Michigan's 18-6 victory.
The Wolverines fell 5-3 in the series opener but took the third game 5-3. Patrick went 1-for-3 with an RBI in the win.
Michigan is 27-26-1 overall and 13-11 in conference play and hosts No. 22 Kansas Saturday and Sunday in Ann Arbor, Mich.
