Devon Brecke, a 5-foot-9 sophomore guard for the No. 23-ranked Northern State University women's basketball team, helped the Wolves to a 58-44 win over Winona State Friday in Aberdeen.

The former Wagner standout was 3-of-4 from behind the arc for nine points in the game and added four rebounds.

Northern (17-3, 13-3 NSIC) is now three games ahead of second-place Minot State in the NSIC North Division standings heading into the weekend, when it hosts Minnesota-Duluth Friday and St. Cloud State Saturday.

• Mitchell Christian graduate Mariah Nelson, now a junior on the Northern State women's track and field team, brought home two top-20 finishes from the Minnesota State-Mankato Open over the weekend in Mankato, Minn.

Nelson finished 13th overall in the shot put with a throw of 11.83 meters and was 19th overall in the women's weight throw with a throw of 13.40 meters.

Whitney Kuyper, a Stickney native and sophomore for the Wolves, finished 17th overall in the meet in the mile run with a time of 5 minutes, 34.20 seconds. She was also the first leg of NSU's distance medley relay team, which finished in sixth.

Northern travels to Fargo, N.D., this weekend for the Bison Open.

Shelby Assmus, a senior thrower for the South Dakota State Jacks, posted two top-10 finishes and set two personal-best marks Jan. 25 at the Minnesota Jack Johnson Invite in Minneapolis.

Assmus, a Stickney native, finished fifth overall in the shot put with a mark of 47-1.5 and seventh in the weight throw with a distance of 57-1.

Also recording a new personal best for the Jacks was sophomore Rochelle Wynia, a Platte native, who finished the 3,000-meter run with a final time of 11:26.13.

SDSU competes again Feb. 7-8 in Lincoln, Neb., at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational.
