Catching up with former area athletes: 10/24

Two former area standouts had breakout games for the Augustana College football team in its 35-6 homecoming win over Upper Iowa (4-3, 4-3 NSIC) Saturday at Kirkeby-Over Stadium in Sioux Falls.
Sophomore running back Justin Greenway, a Mitchell native, carried the ball five times for 23 yards, while redshirt freshman and former Hanson Beaver Jake Bartscher scored his first career touchdown in the win. Bartscher caught an 11-yard reception from quarterback Trey Heid.
Augustana (3-4, 3-4 NSIC) takes on in-city rival University of Sioux Falls Saturday in an NSIC showdown. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at Bob Young Stadium in Sioux Falls.
Montrose native Sierra Miles, a sophomore for the Black Hills State University cross country team, finished 31st overall with a time of 20 minutes, 7.7 seconds at the Montana State Billings Invitational Oct. 12 in Billings, Mont.
The Yellowjackets finished fifth as a team. Miles and BHSU run again Saturday when they travel to Silver City, N.M., for the RMAC Championships.
Ben Connot, a Winner native, recorded seven tackles for the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Hardrockers in a 60-21 loss to Tiffin University Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa.
Connot, a true freshman and strong safety, has appeared in four games and recorded 20 tackles for the Hardrockers.
SD Mines (4-3) hosts Dakota State University at 1 p.m. Saturday in Rapid City.
University of South Dakota senior cross country runner Jilanne Doom finished 10th at the Tim Young Invitational Saturday held at the Don Baker Cross Country Course in Vermillion. Doom, a 2010 graduate from Wagner High School, finished the race in 19: 16.61, helping the Coyotes to a first-place finish in the meet.
USD’s next action is Saturday at the Mount Marty Invitational in Yankton. The meet kicks off at 10:30 a.m.
