Catching up with former area athletes

Northern State University cross country runner Whitney Kuyper helped the Wolves to a third-place finish in the Randy Smith Invitational Friday at the Ponderosa Golf Course in Glydon, Minn.
Kuyper, a junior for the Wolves and a former Stickney-Mount Vernon Knight, finished in the top 20 with a time of 19 minutes, 2 seconds.
NSU competes again Sept. 28 when it travels to St. Paul, Minn., for the Roy Griak Invitational.
• Former Parkston standout Logan Wagner was part of a school-record 352 finish for the Mount Marty women's golf team at the first Great Plains Athletic Conference qualifier Sept. 10 at Wild Oak Golf Club in Mitchell.
The Lancers took fourth and Wagner, a freshman for the Lancers, shot a team-high 84.
Senior Caitlyn Roth, a native of Delmont and an all-GPAC performer in 2012-13, shot a 92 in the event.
• Emily Johnson, a junior on the University of Sioux Falls volleyball team, led the Cougars with 17 kills in a 3-1 victory over Missouri Western University Saturday in Sioux Falls.
Johnson, a Platte native, also recorded 17 kills against Northwest Missouri State in the second match of the day -- which the Cougars won 3-1.
USF (7-1, 0-0 NSIC) returns home Saturday to host rival Augustana College at 4 p.m. in the Stewart Center.
