Catching up: Brecke almosts records double-double for Northern State
Devon Brecke, a sophomore for the Northern State University women’s basketball team, was just shy of recording a double-double in the Wolves’ 87-83 loss to the University of Mary Saturday in Bismarck, N.D.
Brecke, a Wagner native, finished the night with 13 points and nine rebounds in 35 minutes of action, shooting 5-of-11 from the field.
NSU (5-2, 1-2 NSIC) hosts Minnesota-Crookston at 6 p.m. Friday in the first game of a three-game home stretch.
- Sophomore guard Marie Malloy filled the stat sheet with 11 points, five rebounds, three assists andthree steals for the University of Sioux Falls in a 76-70 loss to rival Augustana College Saturday in the Stewart Center in Sioux Falls in front of 1,251 fans.
The former Parkston Trojan has started three consecutive games for the Cougars. USF (5-2, 1-2 NSIC) travels to Winona, Minn., Friday to face Winona State.
-Brigitte Gross and Kendra Knight, both redshirt seniors on the University of Sioux Falls track and field team, had success in their season opener at the Minnesota State-Mankato Chuck Peterson Preseason Open over the weekend in Mankato, Minn.
Gross, a Hanson graduate, came away with titles in the 60-meter hurdles with a finish of 8.99 seconds and in the pole vault with a vault of 12 feet, 6.75 inches, winning the competition by more than seven inches and also notching an NCAA provisional qualifying standard.
Mitchell native Kendra Knight placed second overall in the 600-meter dash with a time of 1:35.60.
- Mitchell native and South Dakota State University swimmer Andrea Budahl won the 1,650-yard freestyle at the Jean Freeman Invite Saturday in Minneapolis.
Budahl finished in 17:22.2 to win the race. Budahl also placed fifth in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:05.79, while finishing seventh in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.8.
Budahl took second in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:36.85.
Trina Young, a Mitchell native, finished fourth in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:09.12. She also took eighth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.5 and helped the women’s 200-yard freestyle relay to a ninth-place finish.
