Canova-Salem wins second straight VFW title
NORTHVILLE — The Canova-Salem teener baseball team won its second straight VFW State B baseball tournament with an 8-4 victory over Gary-Canby in the championship game Sunday in Northville.
Canova-Salem trailed 4-1 going into the bottom of the second inning, but scored the next seven runs of the game to claim the title.
“Going down 4-1, they were hitting our pitcher pretty good,” Canova-Salem coach Mike Gassman said. “We made a change to Kendall (Gassman) and he took care of them the rest of the way. We knew our hitting would come around and it did.”
Kendall Gassman picked up the win on the mound in relief. He threw three innings, allowing one hit and no walks. Jordan Genzlinger started for Canova-Salem, allowing four runs on six hits in four innings.
Braeden Paul took the loss in relief for Gary-Canby, allowing four runs on one hit in one inning.
Kohl Miller hit a two-run double for Canova-Salem in the bottom of the fifth inning to put his team up for good.
The only home run of the tournament came off the bat of Canova-Salem’s Genzlinger, who finished the title game with two RBIs and two runs scored.
“When he (Genzlinger) hit one out of the park it set the tone that we weren’t going away,” Mike Gassman said.
Collin Cleveland went 2-for-4 with two RBI’s for Canova/Salem. Tanner Miller went 2-for-4, including a double and drove in a pair of runs for the champs.
Alexandria 4, Northville 3NORTHVILLE — The Alexandria teener team topped host Northville to win the consolation championship of the VFW B state teener tournament Sunday in Northville.
Trailing 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, Alexandria scored the tying run on an infield error. Trent Kingsbury drove in the game-winning run with a two-out single that allowed Wyatt Kayser to cross home plate for the 4-3 win.
Kingsbury pitched all seven innings for Alexandria, allowing three runs, two earned on six hits and struck out four. He was 3-for-4 at the plate, with a double and an RBI. Kayser finished 2-for-3.
Zach Heidenreich took the loss for Northville. He allowed two runs in one inning of relief.
Canova-Salem 5, Webster 4
NORTHVILLE — The Canova-Salem teener baseball team advanced to the championship of the VFW B state teener tournament with a 5-4 win over Webster Saturday in Northville.
Canova-Salem rallied from a 4-1 deficit to win, while Webster left 14 runners on base in the seven-inning game. Webster left runners on base in every inning.
Connor Hamilton got the win for Canova -Salem on the mound, pitching three scoreless innings, allowing two hits. Trevor Wilkinson finished with one hit and two RBIs for Canova-Salem, while Tanner Miller and Cole Gassman each added a hit in the win.
Alexandria 7, Gregory 3
NORTHVILLE — Alexandria advanced to the consolation championship of the VFW B state teener tournament with a 7-3 win over Gregory Saturday in Northville.
Alexandria jumped out to a 6-0 lead on Gregory in the second inning and held on. Dillon Moore finished 2-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBIs for Alexandria. Josh Feiner picked up the win on the mound with seven innings pitched, allowing three runs on seven hits and struck out eight.
Robert Vomacha took the loss for Gregory, allowing seven runs on seven hits and struck out nine in seven innings. Matt Campbell finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored for Gregory.
Northville 11, Kimball/White Lake 2
NORTHVILLE — Host team Northville topped Kimball/White Lake 11-2 to advance to the consolation championship of the VFW B state teener tournament Saturday in Northville.
Riley Gilbert pitched all seven innings for Northville allowing two runs on four hits and struck out two.
Seth Kirsch took the loss for K/WL. He threw five innings, allowing eight runs, three earned on seven hits and struck out two. Kory Peters and Derek Storm each finished with a hit and run scored for K/WL.
