It’s not unusual for runners to be close that early in the race, but it’s uncommon for Class AA and B runners to compete head-to-head.

Members of the Cougars track team found themselves in matchups with several Class A and AA schools Tuesday, with BSC being the lone Class B program competing in the Corn Palace Relays this year.

“I think a lot of people underestimate our ability because we are from a smaller town, but we are just out here to do our personal best,” BSC athlete Sierra Votaw said. “It’s good to go against the bigger schools because we are going to run against people like this at state. This is good experience and it will push us to get better.”

Votaw was a member of the Cougars 3,200-meter relay, which finished second Tuesday and was a second shy of qualifying for the Class B state meet. BSC finished behind Harrisburg, which won the event with a time of 10 minutes, 16.88 seconds. For more results, see Page B2.

“Our coach is really trying to find meets where we can push ourselves, so it feels good to be out here,” BSC athlete Allison Sebern said. “Living in a small town, sometimes it is hard to get good competition, but it is exciting to get out here and run.”

Sebern has already qualified for the Class B state meet in the 400-meter dash. Last year, she finished second to Ipswich’s Macy Heinz at the Class B meet in the 400.

Class AA teams at the meet included Mitchell, Yankton, Huron, Aberdeen Central, Harrisburg and Brandon Valley. Class A teams participating were Chamberlain and Clark/Willow Lake.

“We were looking for good competition and we found it with some of the double-A schools and B schools,” BSC coach Ron Determan said. “We told the kids to just go out and compete hard and do the best you can do.”

Mitchell activities director Geoff Gross said the event normally draws between 15 to 25 schools, but was lower in attendance this year because it had to be rescheduled. The Corn Palace Relays were originally set to take place Thursday, but expected inclement weather forced the date to be moved up.

“The weather actually turned out pretty good, and it was a nice turn out,” Gross said. “We lost about half the field because a lot of other schools had Tuesday meets already going on. The schedule was a little off because we were expecting more teams and the classes were a little off because we have so many double-A teams and only a couple B and A schools, but we got it done.”

Mitchell’s Ellie Rew won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.33, while Taylor Volesky won the triple jump and Abby Sudbeck won the discus. Chamberlain’s Hudson Priebe won the boys long jump, 100- and 300-meter hurdles.
