Burke girl wins oratory contest
Esther Swift, Burke, sponsored by the Burke Post 28 and representing District 3 of the South Dakota American Legion, won the State Championship Oratory Contest for 2014. She was awarded a championship trophy, a $1,000 scholarship and a plaque to be displayed in her home school’s trophy case.
Swift will now represent South Dakota American Legion in the National Contest in April in Indianapolis, Ind. She had previously won on local and district levels.
The contest was held during the Mid-Winter Conference of the American Legion held Jan. 24-26 in Huron. Contestants were required to deliver a prepared oration of eight to 10 minutes on the U.S. constitution as their first oration. In turn a constitutional topic was assigned to the contestants and a three- to fi ve-minute extemporaneous oration was required on that topic. Each contestants was allowed fi ve minutes of preparation time.
Other winners were: Emily Meier, Aberdeen, second; Abby Boner, Castlewood, third; Kimberly Chow, North Sioux City, fourth; Esther Grassmid, Scotland, fi fth; and Kaitlyn Dix, Lemmon, sixth.
