Buffalo County chase ends in fatal shooting
FORT THOMPSON — A federal official confirmed Thursday that a man was killed by law enforcement after a chase Wednesday in Buffalo County.
Minneapolis Division FBI spokesman Kyle Loven said the bureau is in charge of an investigation into the pursuit. He is unsure whether the chase was high-speed, he said.
“No law enforcement were injured,” he said. “But, there was a person who engaged law enforcement who was killed at the scene.”
The pursuit began on South Dakota Highway 34 in Buffalo County. The highway goes through the Crow Creek Indian Reservation in Buffalo County, but Loven did not know if the chase entered the reservation or whether the shooting happened on the reservation.
A tip to The Daily Republic indicated that a U.S. marshal was involved in the incident. Loven confirmed the Marshals Service’s involvement but declined to say whether a marshal fired on the suspect.
The FBI was not involved in the chase, so the agency is in charge of the investigation, Loven said.
