Brookings to spend $70K on a new fire safety house
BROOKINGS (AP) — The Brookings Fire Department is retiring its fire safety house after more than 20 years of service.
The Brookings Register reported city council members have voted to spend just over $70,000 for a new fire demonstration building. The department’s current fire safety house was built by volunteer firefighters and has been visited by tens of thousands of Brookings County kids.
Chief Darrell Hartmann says it has “had its better days.” He says crews have been trying to keep it together, and they’ve had everything from squirrels to vagrants in it. The chief says the new, single-story fire safety house will transport more easily than its predecessor.
