The Fighting Cougars (0-3) came into the game hoping to play off the emotion of their homecoming crowd. The energy was quickly drained when Bon Homme’s Joe Jaeger recovered a fumble on the first play from scrimmage.

“Our defense played really well, allowing on 112 yards in the first and our special teams came through with big returns,” Bon Homme coach Byron Pudwill said. “We had some big plays and we were helped out by some short fields.”

The Cavaliers (1-1) took the early 6-0 lead on a 20-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dakota Bodden to Scott Van Winkle with 8:31 remaining in the first quarter.

After both teams struggled to get much offense going for most of the first half, MC/M running back Tim Gassman broke loose for a 91-yard touchdown run with 4:31 remaining in the second quarter to give his team a 7-6 lead. The score was the longest play from scrimmage in the history of Fighting Cougar football.

The jubilation was short lived as Bon Homme’s Chase Kortan returned the ensuing kick for an 81-yard touchdown to put the Cavaliers back on top 12-7.

“Talk about an emotional roller coaster,” MC/M coach Ryan Evans said. “We go in and talk about a special teams, and you see what happens when you don’t tackle.”

The big plays on special teams continued for Bon Homme in the second half as the Cavaliers returned the opening kick to the MC/M 6-yard line. Bodden scored three plays later on a 13-yard run to give the Cavaliers a 19-7 lead.

Bon Homme tacked on a 2-yard touchdown run from sophomore Alex Caba with 1:34 left in the fourth quarter.

Bodden completed 7 of 17 passes for 82 yards and a touchdown for the Cavaliers, while rushing for 47 yards and another score. Scott Wieseler hauled in four receptions for 28 yards. Bon Homme was led on defense by Wieseler and Lucas Crownover, each with six tackles. Hunter Young had the Cavaliers’ only interception.

Gassman finished with 11 carries for 133 yards for the Fighting Cougars. Tyler Cleveland led the MC/M defense with 10 tackles, while Jesse Muth added eight.

Bon Homme plays at Tri-Valley Friday, while McCook Central/Montrose travels to Beresford Friday.
