SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — Junior guard Celeste Beck scored 29 points to lead the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team to an 86-81 win over Hope International Saturday in Santa Clarita, Calif.

Beck shot 9-of-13 from the field, making seven 3-pointers and grabbing seven rebounds for the Tigers (11-4).

“Celeste is the one that kept us in the game,” DWU coach Jason Christensen said. “On four possessions, she hit three 3-pointers to get us back in the game. We noticed she was on so we ran a couple of sets for her.

The Tigers fell behind by as many as 16 points in the first, but behind the hot shooting of Beck, DWU outscored Hope 52-43 in the second half to secure the win.

Junior forward Katie Johnson scored 20 points for the Tigers and grabbed 10 rebounds for the double-double, while Kim Johnson added 15 points, four rebounds and three assists.

The Tigers outrebounded Hope 41-30, while both teams finished with 15 assists.

Hope, which is receiving votes in the NAIA Division I poll, had four players score in double figures led by Brittany Bauman with 24 points. Andrina Rendon added 23 points for the Royals, while Krystal Canning finished with 17.

DWU shot 28-of-58 from the field as a team and made 23-of-35 free throws. Hope was 29-of-62 from the field and 17-of-27 from the free-throw line.

“There are some teams that look to go 10-0 in their non-conference schedule, but I am just looking for ways to make my team better,” Christensen said of his team’s tough non-conference slate.

DWU returns home to Great Plains Athletic Conference play with a matchup against No. 16 Hastings College. The Tigers play the Mustangs at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell. The game will be the Tigers’ Alumni Night.
