Avice Mary Kunkel

Avice Kunkel, 92, Mitchell, died Friday, November 29, 2013, at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell. Funeral services will be Monday, December 2, 2013, 10:30 AM, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 6-8PM Sunday evening with a Scripture Service at 7:00PM at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Avice Mary Kunkel was born January 14, 1921, at Vivian, SD, to John and Ida Belle (Hatfield) Schroeder. She attended school at Plano. On November 22, 1939, she married Mark John Kunkel at Epiphany, SD. They farmed in the Epiphany area for 37 years, and then retired to Mitchell in 1976. She was a member of Holy Three Kings Catholic Church in Epiphany where she was an officer with the Ladies Altar Society and was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell.

She is survived by eight children: Mark John Kunkel and Marcella of Fulton; Jim Kunkel and Gloria of Alexandria; Larry Kunkel and Judi of Alexandria; Dennis Kunkel and Cheryl of Mitchell; Jean Haiar and Duane of Mitchell; Betty Sprague and Dan of Albert Lea, MN; Linda Schabauer and Ernest of Rapid City; JoAnne Carter and Jim of Onida; one sister, Zina Scheuren and Arnold of Spencer, one brother-in-law, Henry Kunkel and Fern of Mitchell, two sisters-in-law, Ann Kunkel of Mitchell and Hilda Schroeder of Alexandria, 24 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Mark, her parents, six brothers: Marshall Schroeder and Irene; Randall Schroeder; Kenneth Schroeder and Marilyn; Burdell Schroeder; Ardus Schroeder and Neddie; Dell Schroeder and Norma; five sisters: Ella Miller and Joe; Velda Schroeder; Hazel Chester and Lawrence; Lucile Herron and Rob; Sylvia Essick and Clyde; her in-laws: John and Elizabeth Kunkel; Ray and Alma Kunkel; Sylvester and Marie Kunkel; Leo and Ceil Kunkel; Marie and Albert Tentinger; Hilda and Lee Mutziger; one great grandchild Houston Kunkel, a special nephew Randall Schroeder and godson, Curtis Kunkel.
