Mesman, a 6-foot-3 forward, scored in double figures in all three wins for the Bon Homme boys’ basketball team last week and had one double-double.

Mike MesmanThe senior scored 10 points in Bon Homme’s 81-39 road win over Tripp-Delmont/Armour Jan. 21 and led the team with 15 points and eight rebounds in another road victory Saturday over Dakota Christian.

Mesman’s double-double came in Bon Homme’s biggest game of the week against Region 5A rival Parkston. He had 11 points and 10 rebounds as the Cavaliers edged the Trojans 70-68 Thursday in Tyndall.

For his efforts, Mesman has been named The Daily Republic’s athlete of the week, an award voted on by the newspaper’s sports staff.

“He has worked relentlessly on his jump shot and is an excellent midrange and three-point shooter,” Bon Homme fourth-year coach Chris Gubbrud said. “He’s gotten a lot better at being a more aggressive player and has become better at rebounding because of that.”

This year, Mesman averages 10.3 points, 7.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists one block and one steal per game. He is also shooting 70 percent from the line.

“He’s been one of those guys who gets other players into the gym,” Gubbrud said, adding he’s seen improvements in Mesman’s game in the four years he has worked with him. “This year, I knew he was going to have a little bit of a coming out party and it has certainly been that.”

Gubbrud said his goal is for Mesman to continue playing well through the rest of the season and help lead the Cavaliers to the Region 5A title.

Bon Homme (7-4) sits third behind Mount Vernon/Plankinton (7-4) and Parkston (7-4) in the region. Despite having the same record, the other teams have more power points.

The Cavaliers play two games this week as they travel to Beresford today and host Andes Central Thursday in Tyndall.
