Athlete of the week: Hinker helps WiLdKat girls to 8-1

WHITE LAKE — Having Jazmyn Hinker on the court has helped the Kimball/White Lake girls’ basketball team to an 8-1 record.

“She’s a huge leader for us,” WiLdKat first-year coach Tacey Nielsen said. “She’s one of the things that holds us together offensively and defensively.”

Hinker, of White Lake, scored 35 points in the WiLdKats’ two wins last week. The 5-foot-7 senior guard scored a team-high 20 points to lead Kimball/White Lake over Dakota Christian 54-38 Jan. 7 and 15 points in a 53-28 victory over Colome Thursday.

For her efforts, Hinker has been named The Daily Republic’s athlete of the week, an award voted on by the newspaper’s sports staff.

Nielsen said the senior leader draws attention and opens up opportunity for other players.

“She’s difficult to guard because she’s very good at hitting an open shot and penetrating to the net,” Nielsen said. “She’s a very coachable kid and she gives you everything she’s got in practice and games.”

Hinker is averaging 15.2 points per game and has made 43 percent of her shots from the field this season. She has totaled 30 steals, 19 rebounds and 25 assists for the WiLdKats, who are on a five-game win streak.

Hinker and Kimball/White Lake will be greatly tested today in a contest against No. 3 Sanborn Central/Woonsocket in Kimball. Junior varsity action between the WiLdkats and Blackhawks begins at 6 p.m. with the varsity game following.
