Athlete of the week: Freshman DeMers throws no-hitter for Winner/Colome
WINNER -- A freshman was asked to come through on the mound for the Winner/Colome baseball team in the first-round region playoffs.
Drew DeMers not only delivered, the youngster threw a no-hitter in a 10-0 victory over South Central/Burke/Gregory/Bonesteel Wednesday.
"He kept the ball down and we were able to field behind him," Winner/Colome coach Drew Weber said. "He was throwing a lot of strikes and getting ahead of batters. He knows where to pitch. He's really steady and a smart player."
DeMers recorded seven strikeouts and walked one. A second batter reached base on a fielding error.
For his efforts, DeMers was named The Daily Republic's athlete of the week, an award voted on by the newspaper's sports staff.
Weber said DeMers hasn't seen a lot of time on the mound because of the team's depth in the rotation.
"We have a multitude of pitchers this season," Weber said. "He did a great job in the playoffs against a team we had problems with early in the year."
DeMers has also played a major role offensively. He is averaging .311 and has recorded 17 RBIs in 14 games.
"I expect a lot of big things for him," Weber said. "His future is bright and he puts a lot of time and energy into baseball."
Winner/Colome is 12-2 on the season and plays St. Thomas More Wednesday for a spot in the Class B state baseball tournament, which is Monday in Sioux Falls. Wednesday's game is set for 6:30 p.m. CDT in Rapid City.
