Athlete of the week: Dodd records career-high 17 kills, leads Hanson to 2 wins
ALEXANDRIA -- Senior Sydney Dodd is a quiet leader.
The Hanson outside hitter stepped up last week to lead by example in the Beavers’ match against Mount Vernon/Plankinton. After the Beavers trailed 2-0, Dodd flipped a switch to record her career high in kills.
“We came out and lost two sets right away,” said Dodd, who recorded 17 kills and added 12 digs against the Titans. “I felt like I needed to step up and show some leadership to the team. It was pretty sweet that we could come back like that.”
Hanson went on to defeat the Titans 19-25, 21-25, 26-24, 25-22, 15-10 Thursday.
Dodd also tallied seven kills and three digs in the Beavers’ three-set win over Howard Sept. 10.
For her efforts, Dodd has been named The Daily Republic’s athlete of the week, an award voted on by the newspaper’s sports staff.
“(Dodd) speaks when she needs to to help motivate the rest of the team,” Hanson head coach Yolanda Price said. “She is very coachable and a pleasure to work with.”
Price, whose team is 6-1 on the season, added Dodd has rotated to play some defense this season after being an offensive player in the past.
“She has adjusted very well,” Price said. “ … Her strength is being able to hit a sharp angle and hit the line when asked to do so.”
The Beavers won their first four matches of the season before dropping a four-setter to Parkston.
Dodd and Hanson look to get back at it with two matches this week. The Beavers host Marion today and Avon Thursday in Alexandria.
