TYNDALL — Every coach wants an athlete like Caitlin McLouth.

“She’s very coachable and has a ton of athleticism,” Bon Homme track and field coach Byron Pudwill said. “She’s a multi-sport athlete and is very gifted.”

The senior used her talents to earn two first-place finishes at the Wagner Relays April 15. McLouth won the 100-meter hurdles and triple jump, while finishing third in the 300-meter hurdles.

“Her coordination, technique and skills set her apart,” Pudwill said. “The hurdles aren’t easy. There’s 10 pieces of lumber that don’t feel good when you hit them, and she doesn’t do that very often."

For her efforts, McLouth was named The Daily Republic’s athlete of the week, an award voted on by the newspaper’s sports staff.

McLouth, who has qualified for the state meet in the 100 hurdles, ran a time of 15.7 seconds to win the event last week. In the 300 hurdles, she recorded a time of 53.57 to finish third behind Mount Vernon/Plankinton’s Mikayla Weiss (51.0) and Bon Homme’s Morgan Rothschadl (53.14).

In the triple jump, she had a leap of 32 feet, nine inches to beat the rest of the field by more than a foot.

McLouth’s goal is to qualify for state in four events this season, but one thing that is atop the agenda is helping the Cavaliers to team titles. Bon Homme has won 54 conference and region championships since 1990 for boys and girls combined, said Pudwill. Bon Homme is in the Southeastern South Dakota Conference and Little Missouri Valley Conference.

“Team goals are big with us,” Pudwill said.

McLouth will play volleyball and participate in track and field next year for Dakota Wesleyan University. She will be back in action at the South Dakota-Nebraska Challenge at 2 p.m. today in Tyndall.
