Athlete of the week: Bice improves to 36-1 with tourney win
WINNER — After going 4-0 at the Big Dakota wrestling tournament Saturday, Winner’s Sean Bice was crowned champion in the 138-pound weight class in Fort Pierre.
The senior wrestler won by fall over his first three opponents and won by decision in the championship at the 20-team tournament. Bice beat Stanley County’s Michael Scott 6-3 in the 138-pound title match.
For his efforts, Bice was named The Daily Republic’s athlete of the week, an award voted on by the newspaper’s sports staff.
“Sean comes out the same every match and gets himself mentally ready to go,” Winner wrestling coach Matt Chambers said. “He has a plan and since Christmas break, he’s gotten a lot more aggressive.
“He does a very nice job at staying patient and takes advantage of situations.”
Bice took second at the Class B state tournament as a sophomore and missed state his junior year because of an injury. He recorded a 33-2 record as a junior and sat out the final few matches of the year because of a broken thumb.
Chambers said Bice is hungry to do well this season after missing state last year.
“He hit the weight room hard this summer and set some goals right after he hurt his thumb,” he said. “He’s pretty motivated and he’s taken that to the next level.”
This season, Bice is 36-1 with his only loss coming to a North Dakota wrestler, whom he lost to at the Rapid City Invitational earlier this year.
Bice and the Warriors hit the mat again Saturday at the Huron Invite. The invite begins at 10 a.m.
