Athlete of the week 12/31/13: Howard's Loudenburg wins at 18-team tourney
HOWARD — After winning back-to-back state championships, Luke Loudenburg hasn’t skipped a beat as a junior.
Over the weekend, the Howard 138-pounder went 4-0 and won the Floyd Farrand Invitational in Sioux Falls, a tournament with both Class A and Class B teams.
Loudenburg defeated Sioux Falls Roosevelt sophomore Kyle Yasgar 6-1 in the championship match.
For his efforts, Loudenburg was named The Daily Republic’s athlete of the week, an award voted on by the newspaper’s sports staff.
He pinned Wagner’s Logan Kafka in the opening round and beat Sioux Falls Washington’s Grant Rosheim and Brookings’ Peter Hansen en route to the title match.
The tournament had 13 Class A and five Class B teams. Parkston, a Class B team, won the tournament, while Howard placed 13th.
Loudenburg was the lone Tiger to win a title Saturday and is 11-1 on the season.
Last year, Loudenburg won the 120-pound championship over Burke/Gregory’s Kurt Braun as a sophomore.
As a freshman at 106 pounds, Loudenburg recorded a 44-1 record and won his first state title. He was in the title match at 103 as an eighth grader but fell to Webster’s Nolan Richie.
