Athlete of the week 11/26/13: Calhoon leads Winner to runner-up finish
WINNER — After falling short of the state tournament in 2012, the Winner volleyball team made sure to make the most of its trip this year.
The Warriors not only qualified for the Class A state tournament, they advanced to the championship match, where they fell to No. 2 Dakota Valley in four sets.
Winner’s offense was led by Lindsey Calhoon all tournament. The senior outside hitter led the Warriors in all three of their games over the weekend.
“She’s a fighter and is a little spit fire on the court,” Winner volleyball coach Jamie Keiser said. “She stepped up as a senior and did her job like we talked about, if not better.”
In the Warriors’ opening-round win over Wagner, Calhoon recorded 14 kills and 14 digs for a double-double.
In the semifinal match, Calhoon had nine kills, 10 digs and two aces in Winner’s five-set upset win over No. 1 Belle Fourche. Belle Fourche was the only top-seeded team in all state tournaments to not win the title.
In the championship match, Calhoon recorded a double-double with a team-high 10 kills and 26 digs to lead her team to a runner-up finish.
For her efforts, Calhoon was named The Daily Republic athlete of the week, an award voted on by the newspaper’s sports staff.
She finished the tournament with 33 kills and 40 digs. She also had three aces and was named to the all-tournament team for the first time.
Throughout the season, Calhoon was the team’s second-best hitter. She finished her senior season with 208 kills and 471 digs.
