Athlete of the week 10/15/13: Gregory's Braun throws four passes, scores four TDs
GREGORY — Kurt Braun threw four passes Friday, all of which were touchdowns.
“I have a lot of trust in my receivers,” Gregory’s junior quarterback said. “They go up and make plays for me.”
In a high school football game against Andes Central Friday, Braun was 4-for-4 for 114 yards and four scores, and the first-year starter’s passes were for 30, 40, 25 and 19 yards to receivers Gavin Thomas, Andrew Taggart and running back Jonah Beck.
The Gorillas went on to earn their sixth win of the season, beating the Eagles 54-14.
For Braun’s efforts, Braun has been named The Daily Republic’s athlete of the week, an award voted on by the newspaper’s sports staff.
Gorilla head coach Brian Allmendinger said Braun made some nice plays in Friday’s win, scrambling from right to left and throwing for a 40-yard touchdown pass to Taggart.
“The pocket collapsed and I rolled out to the right and the Andes guys came at me,” Braun said. “I went back left, threw it up and hoped he’d make the play. And he did.”
Allmendinger added Braun’s always been good at running the ball but has become a good passer this season.
“You’ve got to give him credit because he works hard and has gotten a lot better,” he said.
Braun said he learned a lot from being Jaden Bartling’s backup the last two seasons. Bartling was The Daily Republic’s football player of the year in 2012.
“I’ve just tried to be patient and it helped watching Jaden,” Braun said. “He was so calm back there and saw the field really well.”
Class 9AA’s fourth-ranked Gorillas are 6-1 and have one regular season game left in the season. Gregory has a bye week and finishes the regular-season by hosting Tripp-Delmont/Armour Oct. 24.
“Everything is starting to click for us,” Braun said. “We hope to keep improving and be ready come playoff time.”
