MHS boys’ soccer falls to Tea Area

TEA — The Mitchell High School boys’ soccer team gave up three second-half goals in four minutes in a 5-1 loss to Tea Area Saturday.

Kelby Escobin found the back of the net on a feed from Isaac Novak for the Kernels (2-8-2) and sent the game into the half at 2-1.

Cole Carlson made 12 saves for Mitchell, as Tea Area outshot the Kernels 17 to four.

Mitchell concludes its 2013 season against Groton Area Tuesday at 4 p.m. in Groton.

Kernels finish 8th at ESD tourney

PIERRE — The Mitchell High School boys’ golf team finished eighth out of nine teams at the Eastern South Dakota Conference tournament Saturday in Pierre.

Jaron Weich tied for seventh overall, shooting a 79 for Mitchell.

Jace Guthmiller took home the individual title for Yankton, finishing with a 74.

Yankton also took the team title with a 311, while Aberdeen Central shot a 319 for second, and Brandon Valley came in third with a 322.

Mitchell pays a triangular against Brookings and Sioux Falls Washington at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Brookings Country Club.

DWU volleyball drops two against ranked opponents

HASTINGS, Neb. — Struggles continued for the young Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team, as the Tigers dropped two matches on their weekend trip to Nebraska.

DWU (4-15) lost to No. 5-ranked Midland 25-18, 25-13, 25-13 Friday. Sarah Kruse had a team-high 11 kills in the loss, while Brianna Jung added 12 assists.

Against Hastings, the Tigers again fell in straight sets 25-10, 25-16, 25-15. Mallory Jark had eight kills for DWU, while Jung racked up 11 assists.

The Tigers play Northwestern College at 7:30 Tuesday in Mitchell.

Tigers finish seventh at Dean White Invite

CRETE, Neb. — Haley Brunke finished with a time of 21 minutes, 22.51 to pace the Dakota Wesleyan University women’s cross country team to a seventh-place finish at the Dean White Invitational Saturday in Crete, Neb.

Skylar Forgey and Jessica Neises finished 43rd and 46th respectively for the Tiger women.

Kellan Willet finished 11th with a time of 27:34.98 to lead the DWU men. Trace Tjeerdsma was to the only other racer for the Tigers, finishing 36th with a time of 29:29.20.

MHS tennis takes one of three at Pierre Invite

PIERRE — The Mitchell High School girls’ tennis team defeated Rapid City Central 5-4 after falling 9-0 to both St. Thomas More and Rapid City Stevens Saturday in Pierre.

At left are more results.

The Kernels (7-14) took four of six singles matches against Rapid City Central to secure the win. Haley Smith, Sammy Pooley, Allison Buckley and Avery Larson all posted singles wins for Mitchell.

The Kernels were unable to get much going against St. Thomas More and Rapid City Stevens as they were swept in both matches.

The Kernels play Vermillion at 4 p.m. today at Hitchcock Park in Mitchell.
