A pair of Mitchell area residents will finish up a successful summer of racing this week in Huron.

Corey Elward, of Mitchell, and Grady Myers, of Ethan, each will compete in the year-end Speedway Motors Wissota 100, which started Wednesday and runs through Saturday at the Dakota State Fair Speedway.

Elward earned the season championship in the Wissota Midwest Modifieds class at the Dakota State Fair Speedway, while Myers took the season title in the Wissota Street Stock class.

Myers, a 24-year-old who grew up in Winner, clinched the Wissota Street Stock class' season championship after taking fourth place at an Aug. 20 race in Huron. Racers receive points throughout the summer season with the winner of each race garnering 35 points, Myers said.

"It was really, really close in my division," Myers said. "I believe I was three points ahead of the second-place finisher."

Myers started the final point-earning race of the summer seven points back of Lance Haskell, of Conde. Haskell finished 14th in the 16-car race and Myers took over the season points lead.

Myers said he has raced 18 times at the Dakota State Fair Speedway since the season began in April. His first win of the year came on June 25 in a "Race of Champions" qualifier, which earned him a spot in Friday night's prestigious race. The race will include racers from Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota and South Dakota.

"We all merge together for a race this weekend," Myers said. "It's a lot for bragging rights and it's winner-take-all."

Myers, whose wife, Sarah Myers, is part of his team, also won a race on July 15 in Rapid City.

Throughout the summer, Myers said most races pay about $200 to the winner. The winner of the Wissota 100 races this week will earn a larger prize -- the winner of the Street Stock class will take home a $1,300 check.

Myers also won the street stock race last week at the state fair in Huron.

"I consider that my home track, I race there every time there's a race there," Myers said of the Huron racetrack, which hosts races each Saturday night throughout the summer months.

Myers competes in a mid-1980s Monte Carlo-style stock car. This summer was Myers' first full year of racing street stock. He began racing when he was attending Winner High School.

The Wissota Street Stock class is the lowest of five classes that compete on a normal night at the Dakota State Fair Speedway. The Wissota Super Stocks, Modifieds, Midwest Modifieds and Late Model also will be in competition this week in Huron.

Elward finished ninth in the final point-earning race of the season on Aug. 20 in Huron -- Grady Myers' cousin, Kip Myers, also of Ethan, won the Aug. 20 Midwest Modifieds race. Elward took eighth at the State Fair on Sept. 5.

He picked up wins at the state fair speedway on July 23, June 11 and May 7 and had five other top-5 finishes since the start of the summer in Huron.
