Area high school volleyball roundup: Freeman beats Canistota in five sets

FREEMAN — Vanessa Dowden recorded 10 kills, six digs and one ace to help the Freeman Flyers beat Canistota 3-2 Tuesday in a high school volleyball match.

Set scores were 27-25, 25-20, 20-25, 8-25, 15-13.

Nicole Hinckley added eight kills, two blocks, one dig and one ace for the Flyers. Shelby Jensen chipped in with seven kills, two assists, five digs and three aces, while Mady Pravecek recorded 27 assists and four digs.

Canistota was led by Chloe Nielsen, who recorded 14 kills, two blocks and four aces. Sydney Randall added 22 digs, while Brianna Buseman had nine kills and six blocks. Morgan Larson chipped in with 19 assists.

Freeman won the JV match 2-0.

Canistota (5-13) hosts Menno Tuesday, while Freeman (3-11) hosts Avon Thursday in Freeman.

Andes Central 3, Burke/South Central 0

LAKE ANDES — The Andes Central volleyball team defeated Burke/South Central 25-22, 25-21, 28-26 Tuesday in high school volleyball action.

Dennisha Johanneson tallied a match-high 16 kills, five digs, four aces and one block for the Eagles. Emily Houseman had 20 assists and 11 digs for a double-double, DiMera Dvorak added a team-best 13 digs and Payton Johanneson recorded seven kills, two blocks, 11 digs and seven aces.

The Cougars were led by Shailyn Schweigert, who had 12 assists and 13 digs for a double-double. Grace Hazen added eight kills, nine digs and two aces in the loss.

The Eagles (10-8) play at Wagner Thursday, while Burke/South Central (4-16) plays at Gregory Thursday.

Miller 3, Platte-Geddes 0

PLATTE — Platte-Geddes fell to Miller 25-22, 25-18, 27-25 Tuesday in high school volleyball action.

Madi Whalen had two aces, five kills and 11 assists, Brianna Erickson recorded two aces, four kills and 14 digs and Jermaine Nelson added two aces, four kills and four blocks for Platte-Geddes. Cassidy Plooster tallied four blocks and nine assists, while Josie DeGroot had nine kills and 12 digs.

Miller’s Jamie Mentzer had four aces, 15 digs and eight kills, while Kristen Peterka had 17 kills, one block and 11 digs. Denae Schlechter had 24 assists.

Platte-Geddes (8-10) plays at Chamberlain Thursday, Miller (17-7) hosts Redfield/Doland Monday.

Winner 3, Chamberlain 0

WINNER — Cassidy Hanson recorded 11 kills, 10 digs and seven aces in Winner’s three-set win over Chamberlain Tuesday.

Set scores were 25-9, 25-5, 25-16.

Winner’s Emily Richey tallied a team-high 24 digs, while Sara Husher had 24 assists and 12 digs for a double-double. Lindsey Calhoon added eight kills, 19 digs and two aces.

Chamberlain was led by Sarah Knust with 26 digs. Kennedy Wagner added three assists, 12 digs and one kill.

Chamberlain (4-14) hosts Platte-Geddes Thursday, while Winner (20-3) plays at Wagner Tuesday.

Sanborn Central/ Woonsocket 3,

James Valley Christian 1

HURON — Marissa Weber recorded 18 kills to help Sanborn Central/Woonsocket beat James Valley Christian in four sets Tuesday in high school volleyball action..

Set scores were 23-25, 25-17, 25-11, 25-18.

Weber also had 12 digs and 10 aces, while Myah Selland had six kills for the Blackhawks. Tayla Weber added 17 assists and Bailey Moody had six assists.

James Valley Christian was led by Khiree Held, who finished with six kills and 19 assists. Hannah Loban added 20 assists and Lauren Rink had 42 digs.

Sanborn Central/Woonscket (14-6) hosts Kimball/ White Lake Thursday in Woonsocket. James Valley Christian (4-15) plays Wessington Springs Tuesday in Wessington Springs.

Bon Homme 3, Scotland 2

SCOTLAND — Caitlin McLouth had 14 kills, four blocks and 11 digs to lead Bon Homme past Scotland in five sets.

Set scores were 25-12, 25-8, 22-25, 25-11, 15-8.

Liz Kubal added seven kills, one dig and four aces for the Cavaliers. Emily Pechous had 20 digs and six kills, and three aces. Alie Adams chipped in with 28 assists, 11 digs and two kills.

Scotland was led by Carley Skorepa with 14 kills, 13 digs and two aces. Amber Alvey added two kills, 19 assists 10 digs and four aces for the Highlanders, while Jessica Thum had six kills, one block, 10 digs and two aces.

Bon Homme (15-5) hosts Corisca/Stickney Thursday in Tyndall. Scotland (6-12) plays Tripp-Delmont/Armour Thursday in Tripp.

Hanson 3, Menno 0

ALEXANDRIA — The Hanson Beavers earned their 18th victory of the season, beating Menno 25-19, 25-13, 25-18 Tuesday.

Kynedi Cheeseman tallied 14 kills and five aces, Hailey Doyle had 14 assists and three aces and Leah Marsh added eight digs in the win.

Menno’s Devon Bloch had four kills and four digs, while Madison Huber recorded seven assists and nine digs.

Hanson (18-1) won the JV match and plays at Ethan Thursday, while Menno (3-18) hosts Centerville Monday.

Wessington Springs 3, Sunshine Bible Academy 1

WESSINGTON SPRINGS — Lexi Olinger tallied 19 assists to help lift Wessington Springs over Sunshine Bible Academy 3-1 Tuesday.

Set scores were 25-22, 25-21, 14-25, 25-20.

Shyanne Kofpmann recorded three aces and 12 kills in the win, while Monica Jones had three aces and seven digs. Devin Tebay had two blocks and a team-high 19 digs, Morgan Tebay added 15 assists and Sheyanne Brodkorb had 15 kills.

Sarah Pedersen recorded 11 kills and three blocks to lead the Crusaders, and Erin Rogers added 15 assists.

The Spartans (6-15) plays Wolsey-Wessington Thursday in Wolsey, while Sunshine Bible (10-10) plays Wolsey-Wessington Tuesday.

Wagner 3, Parkston 0

PARKSTON — The Wagner Red Raiders beat the Parkston Trojans in three sets Tuesday in high school volleyball action.

Set scores were 25-22, 26-24, 25-22.

Kim Koupal led the way for Wagner with 13 kills and 16 digs, while Gina Soukup chipped in with 11 kills and 11 digs. Brooklyn Tolliver added 17 digs, Kayla Deurmeier had 16 assists and Krista Dvorak had 18 assists.

Parkston was led by Laura Weiss. She recorded 14 kills and 11 digs. Halli Heisinger added seven kills, while Whitney Weber had eight assists and 10 digs. Kenzie Lee added seven kills and eight digs.

Wagner won the JV match 2-0.

Parkston (13-7) plays Parker Thursday in Parker. Wagner (17-5) hosts Andes Central Thursday in Wagner.

Canton 3, Marion 1

MARION — The Marion Bears fell to Canton in three sets Tuesday.

Set scores were 18-25, 27-25, 25-23, 25-22.

Erica Schoenwald had 21 kills, nine blocks and 17 digs to lead the way for Marion. Devin Nelson added 10 kills, 17 digs, five aces and one assist. Renae Kayser chipped in with 14 assists, 24 digs and four kills for the Bears.

Canton was led by Kristin Twedt, who recorded 11 kills and five digs. Justine Zylstra chipped in with eight kills and three blocks. Tori Iverson added seven kills and five blocks.

Marion (13-7) plays Viborg-Hurley Thursday in Hurley, while Canton (7-12) plays Vermillion Thursday in Vermillion.

Mount Vernon/Plankinton 3,

Tripp-Delmont/Armour 0

MOUNT VERNON— The Mount Vernon/Plankinton Titans beat Tripp-Delmont/Armour in three sets Tuesday to earn their 17th win of the season.

Set scores 25-8, 25-8 25-10.

Megan Bultsma and Dani Stolz each had seven kills to lead the way for MVP. Makaela Karst added 10 aces, while Kallyn Prangley had 15 digs and Mikayla Weiss had 16 assists.

Becca Brown had one block and 10 digs to lead the way for the Nighthawks. Jessica Sandau had two kills, while Hannah Just had one kill and two assists. Payton Schafers added three kills.

MVP (17-2) plays West Central Thursday in Hartford, while TDA (2-15) plays Scotland Thursday in Tripp.

McCook Central/Montrose 3, Garretson 0

GARRETSON — The McCook Central/Montrose Fighting Cougars beat Garretson in three sets to earn their ninth win of the season.

Set scores 25-14, 25-21, 25-17.

MCM was led by Laura Klaudt, who recorded 32 assists. C.J. Ristesund added 15 kills and one block for MCM, while Danielle Hansen chipped in with 13 kills and one block and Brianna Painter recorded 24 digs.

No stats were available for Garretson.

MCM (9-12) won the JV match and plays Tea Area Tuesday in Tea. Garretson (4-16) plays Tea Area Thursday in Tea.

Lyman 3, Jones County 0

PRESHO — Anna Flitner had 14 kills, 27 digs and two blocks to help Lyman defeat Jones County in three sets.

Set scores were 25-13, 27-25, 25-20.

Lyman’s Bailey Almond chipped in with 18 assists and four aces, while Jessica Welter had nine kills and five blocks. Sara Herman added 21 digs and Hanna Thiry had eight assists and two aces.

No stats were available for Jones County.

Lyman (19-7) plays Phillip Thursday in Phillip.

Iroquois 3, Howard 1

HOWARD — The Howard Tigers fell to Iroquois in four sets Tuesday in a high school volleyball match.

Set scores were 25-20, 25-14, 23-25, 25-12.

Kelsey Dawson led the way for Howard with 10 kills. Taylor Noid chipped in with 11 digs and eight kills and Shelby Thompson added six aces, two kills and 14 assists for Howard.

Iroquois was led by Kelsey Blue, who recorded nine kills. Britney Moelier added eight kills and Ashlynne Gross chipped in with 17 digs.

Howard (2-15) plays Baltic Tuesday in Baltic, while Iroquois (4-20) plays De Smet Monday in De Smet.
